Dominant Hands
What is your dominant hand? The hand you use the most to write with, eat with, throw a ball with, shoot a basketball, etc.
Most of the public is right-handed. A few of us, myself included, are left-handed.
Hold an image of a dominant hand in your head for a moment. Here is a concept I would like to introduce. In the workplace or in leadership, people have a dominant style. For example, some people enjoy innovation, ideas, and working with people. Others enjoy paperwork, spreadsheets, creating rules, enforcing policy. These are dominant styles.
I believe that you need to focus on your non-dominant hand; otherwise, you will be in a constant state of frustration with those around you.
So if you love innovation, and ideas, take time to learn the org chart, the paperwork, the bits in the fine print. The fine print is the true mover and shaker in an organization.
The paperwork, and the forms, are what you need to learn. It is odd to say this. I have not been a fan of paperwork and the tiny details. Still, now I understand that on the front end, the innovator is cheered. Still, the innovator can only innovate if the red-tape, paper form person fills out the forms and checks the boxes.
Think about it: If you want to buy a car, you complete an application, same with a job, same with a mortgage, the list can go on and on. The secret is to get good with forms, become a master of paperwork, then you will go far.
