"Generational Wealth: Redefining Love & Compassion"
Today I saw an article about generational wealth. The author discussed our responsibility to provide financial resources for our family members that last after we depart the earth. These resources are designed to help our children gain a leg up in life. After reflection, I had a thought. The definition of generational wealth needs to be expanded. I believe that components of generational wealth should include unconditional love and an example of caring and compassion. This brings me to the question for the day. “What movies you to tears of gives you goosebumps?” In the United States, today is Mother’s Day, and thoughts of my mom bring me to tears and give me goosebumps. My mom gave me generational wealth. She set an example for me by offering care and compassion to others. I believe watching her care for her older brother, who had cancer, and my dad, who had cancer. Her own mother in her final days is a reason why I can do the work I do today working as an educator for students with disabilities. My mom suffered tremendous loss in her life. I had an older brother who passed away at two years old. At the time, that was my mother and father’s only child. I can comprehend the deep wounds that were brought into her life. Yet my mom didn’t inflict a wound on me as she dealt with her grief. It had been difficult to parent me during my father’s battle with the cancer that took his life. I look back now and realize I could have done so much more. My mom passed away in 2007, so as I reflect today on Mother’s Day, My mom didn’t leave me generational wealth in the form of financial resources; she left me an example of compassion, love, and strength of spirit and character that I attempt to live up to and pass on.
