On Implementation.
Your creative work needs to be completed. The work you do needs to go out into the world for the change you seek to make to have a chance at success. To move the needle in this direction, we should start calling ourselves Implementers. The implementer brings plans and ideas to life.
I would argue that being an implementer is just as important as finding your why or discovering who’s it for, or even your mission and vision statement. I could even make a case that it is maybe a bit more important.
The reason for me is this. After a while, your why, who’s it for, mission, and vision statements can become hyperbole. Hyperbole is this.” Exaggerated statements”, designed to make you feel good. If overdone, they prevent you from putting your work into the world. For example, I have seen people spend hours trying to craft the perfect mission/vision statement and share it on Facebook. Then two months later, they quit altogether.
Another example is this, we honor and know the great architects, but none of those buildings would be visible or usable without the individuals who mix the concrete, wire the electrical systems, and install the plumbing.
Instead, do this. Decide on your creative project. Then devote time to that project. Then show up for it. You need to be the architect, and you need to be the construction worker.
Example from my creative life. I am writing my next novel. I want a rough draft finished in 12 weeks. I need to write 595 words a day for the next 85 days to do this. It takes me 15 minutes to write 600 words.
Instead of saying, to write this novel, I need to connect with the highest, most authentic version of myself to produce a product that will impact the most amount of people.
I say this. I will show up for 15 minutes and write 600 words.
Here are the reasons, I know how to write. I know how to set a timer for 15 minutes, and google docs will give me my word count.
I have no idea what my most authentic self looks like, but I know how to show up and put in the work.
That is what it means to be an implementer.
Check out what I am implementing. I have started a new four week-series on my you-tube channel all about bringing your creative work to life. Check out the first video here
In addition, I will be having a creative giveaway at the end of the series. Sign up on my website and be entered into a drawing to win a creative project pack, including a notebook for sketching out your plans, a pack of pens, and a pound of coffee. Why coffee ?
Creativity begins with coffee. Head over to my Youtube channel and check out my Coffee and Creativity Playlist.
