Overcoming Challenges
What challenges do you want to overcome? Negativity bias is a challenge I want to overcome. When I examine how my mind works, I notice that when my thought process begins, it usually drifts into the negative, either expecting bad events to occur or, when considering goals and outcomes, responding with either I don’t deserve it, I haven’t done enough, or I am selfish for considering it, or other people have done more. This is a habit, and it is what I desire to overcome. Instead, I would like to adopt a perspective of hope, to see the future as not something to dread, but to look forward to the positive events that will occur and develop the emotional resilience to handle the defeats, setbacks, and hard events that are a part of all of our lives. It may be too late to stop the negativity bias. Still, it isn’t too late to acknowledge the bias that occurs and adopt a stance that when it does occur, I will acknowledge it but not hook into it and gently change my focus to the present moment and thoughts that bring about hope. Negativity bias is the challenge, and adopting a new perspective is a tool to overcome it.
