Who is getting credit?

I have been told by the media who the great architects are. I know who Frank Lloyd Wright is; I know who Frank Gehry is.

What I don't know is who the builders are. I have never heard of the carpenters, the plumbers, the electricians, the floorers, roofers, and other people who bring a structure to life.

Why is it that way?

I don't want to diminish the role of an architect, but it makes me wonder. Why do we include others and exclude others?

Is it sinister? Do people intentionally want to devalue the supporting cast's role in bringing a project to life?

I think not.

I could be wrong. In some instances, I may be. In others, I might not be.

I believe that inside firms, production companies, they know who the people are behind the scenes who bring what we love to live.

In the end, I don't really know. I do know that there are designers, and there are builders.

The designers need the builders to bring a vision to life. The builders need the specialists to bring their visions to life, or they need to know how to do the tasks that a specialist knows, at least good enough to get the project off the ground.

That brings us around to our own work.

Are you a designer who needs builders? Or are you a designer and a builder?

The good news is that you get to pick.

Resist the temptation to rank or judge. Just pick. Then go and do it.
